MGS 15 – Courage

What to do about Fear

Growing and learning requires that we develop the courage to make friends with our fear.

To get on with doing what we were meant to in this world, we need to learn to become brave.

I wrote an article about this for the Do Lectures over on Medium. In it, I share three ways to help you overcome your fear.

Episode 15 of Mini Growth Sessions is a quick summary of these same three steps.

Be brave, think big, stand tall.

Cheers, Mich

MGS 14 – Optimism

Power up your positive!

Living on the bright side is way better for our wellbeing than we might realise. Episode 14 is about how to bring our force for good to the fore.

Feeling positive really is good for us, as being optimistic can help us combat heart disease.

Despite her own hardships, Helen Keller wrote extensively about seeing positivity in the world.  Her essay on Optimism, written in 1903, is well worth a read. Here’s a quote to get you started:

“No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new heaven for the human spirit.” ~ Helen Keller

Martin Seligman is known as the father of Positive Psychology. He has written several books on optimism and happiness. I found his book ‘Learned Optimism’ particularly helpful as a learning tool during a turning point in my life.

Remember, there’s no such thing as half full or half empty … our cup is always FULL of hope and possibility.

As always, be brave, think big, stand tall.

Cheers, Mich

MGS 13 – Confidence

It’s all about ‘Can’…

It’s within our power to manage our confidence. We do it by matching our beliefs to our actions.

In this week’s episode of Mini Growth Sessions, I share three steps we can use to build and exercise our confidence.

If we know our weak points, then we can work on them…

  • Here’s a more detailed description of self-confidence, with  some super tips on how to develop it.
  • Research indicates that men tend to feel more confident than women. This article (and the video within) has some interesting insights.

Until next time, be brave, think big, stand tall.

Cheers, Mich :)

MGS 12 – EQ

“EQ” represents our Emotional Intelligence.

Our levels of self-awareness and EQ play an important role in how we interact with the world.

The great news is that it’s a learnable skill and we can improve it. In this episode, we cover the basics of how and why we benefit from building our EQ.

Resources:

The term ’emotional intelligence’ was popularised by Daniel Goleman in the 90s.

Research has found that our EQ counts twice as much as our IQ – test your current level here.

This article shares some things we can work on to boost our emotional intelligence and this one covers self-awareness in more detail.

Remember, our EQ is not fixed. So we can improve our self-awareness, develop our empathy and learn to manage our emotions better. Think about what you can do today to get to know yourself better, so that you can become better for others.

Cheers, Mich :)

What We Choose To Put In (Do Contribute)

What we put in affects what we get out.

What we put in

This month’s article for Do Lectures over on Medium is about contribution.

What we put in matters. So, if you want to see the magic happen, choose to do the challenging, difficult, scary, stinky or unknown things with the same energy, willingness and enthusiasm you bring to doing the fun, easy, simple things in life.

When we give more than we expect in return, the upside is that we get lucky. To find out more, head on over to Do Contribute to read “What we put in“.

What goodness are you forgetting to add to your daily tasks and activities?

MGS 11 – Cadence

Cadence is about achieving rhythm in your life

It is far better for us (and more realistic) than striving for the elusive work/life balance.

In episode 11, I reconnect with my inner Madonna and use a choice word to share my opinion on the hype around the elusive goal of creating “balance”. Sensitive viewers cover your ears, or if you’re ready to take charge,  then join me in creating a new movement!

If you want to find out more about cadence, I wrote a Medium post about it here.

MGS10 – Love

The thing about Love…

Looking after ourselves includes loving ourselves in spite of our flaws. To care for and support others well, we first need to have a love of ‘I’. Find out more in Episode 10.

MGS9 – Breathe

Breath is life…

Breathing is fundamental to our state of wellbeing. In episode 9, we explore how we can use breathing to change our mind and body for the better.

Practising conscious breath is one of the most effective ways to change your physiology and your emotional state. It starts with one inhale and one exhale.

MGS8 – Move

A bit of rhythm and moves…

Our third fundamental self-care habit is all about the moves. In episode 8, I share quick ways to incorporate movement into your workdays.

This article highlights several reasons why movement trumps sedentary habits.

Now take your moves to the next level by getting in on some of this Madagascar ‘Move It’ action. You’ll thank me later.

MGS7 – Eat

You are what you eat…

Becoming more aware of what we choose to put onto our forks is the topic of Episode 7. Nutrition is the second fundamental habit of good self-care. We need to learn how to master our forks like a Jedi masters ‘the force’.

I mentioned a few dietary styles you might not be familiar with:

  • Veganism is an ethical philosophy as much as a dietary preference.
  • Paleo focuses on our historical ‘caveman’ tendencies.
  • Pescatarians are fish eating veggies.

Healthier eating starts with awareness and choice.

  • Watch That Sugar Movie… to learn more about the effect of sugar on your system.
  • The documentary What The Health informs on how our current food system impacts on our health.
