How often do you do LESS than you can, simply out of FEAR?
You know what I’m talking about. Although you may call it something else, because Fear is a bit like Voldemort – that which must not be named.
Yet, I guarantee you’ve felt it before.
It’s that the cloying, claustrophobic, scratchy, scare-mongering, hot and heavy cloak you find clasped at your throat, at times when you have an opportunity to fly. Those times when you have the chance to do something more than you thought you could. To do something great.
It’s that shadow-lurking, doubt-casting straightjacket, which traps and weighs you down. Makes you step back into line. Or put your hand back down. Or question your ability. Or feel small.
“Oh”, you say, “that fear!”
Yes, you know it. You may simply express fear in other ways. Using words that make you feel better about doing less than you can to make your life better.
How about:
- “I’m too busy”
- “I’m not ready”
- “I don’t know how to do that, so I can’t”
- “I’m not good enough”
- “I don’t have what it takes”
Sound familiar? Well, how about saying bollards to that instead?
Put fear in its place, instead of letting it ride roughshod over you.
So, what to do the next time you have the opportunity to take a big step in a better direction? How are you going to handle things when fear starts stamping about in clodhopper boots, demanding to sit up front?
It’s simple. You take charge.
You’re going to give it a finger waggle and put it in the backseat. Or even better, give it your best “Not this time, bucko” eye-narrowing glare. Then turn on your heel with your head held high. And walk away, leaving it in your dust.
Remember: YOU are bigger and stronger than your fear!
It doesn’t deserve to meddle with your journey, other than to give you the impetus to do, and become, better. To try harder. To do more than you think you can.
What if you could put your fear in its place, instead of letting it ride shotgun?
Guess what, you can!
Now go fly!
