A revolution starts from within…
Today’s post is of a more personal nature.
I’d like to pay respect to the millions of people who stepped out on Saturday 21st January to make history. There’s something important we can learn from their actions.
Irrespective of the politics that brought about this revolutionary movement, it was amazing and inspiring to witness people expressing themselves both peacefully and powerfully.
So, so many people, all different in terms of background, beliefs, gender, colour, culture or persuasion – yet all together.
This event has no doubt forced many of us to face some difficult questions:
Such as “What do I believe in?” Or “How important is freedom to me?” Or “What type of person do I want to be?”
And perhaps make a decision:
“Do I stand up for who I am and what I want? Or do I stand aside?”
Whether you were there on foot or in spirit, if you got fired up enough to represent, or support those who were, then that means you stood up for two things too.
Claiming your freedom and supporting the freedom of others.
“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.”
~ Jim Morrison (emphasis mine)
Change needs to come from inside of us, for it to impact on what’s outside of us.
Over 5 million individuals each put their hearts on their sleeves for the sake of liberty, equality, diversity and to celebrate the power of the feminine. They each had to look inward to decide what was important enough for them to want to contribute to changing the situation.
So, the moral of the march, as I see it?
Don’t ever think you are powerless to change your situation.
And you don’t even need to take to the streets (or Twitter) to change yourself or the world. And it’s not a one-off event either.
Here’s three steps you can take to get started:
- Decide what’s important to you. What and who you really want to be? How you can live in the fullest, happiest, most loving way you can?
- Then chart the path you need to take to be as you want to be.
- Then actually take the small steps that get you started down that road.
It starts with YOU making a choice.
Emblazon that choice on your sleeve, like a placard of the heart.
Then live, work, share, help, communicate and do. From a place of love.
Set the example so that others can have the courage to follow.
Stand up for LOVE. Daily.
